I recently set out to make a SoulCollage card for procrastination.  I had wanted to collage for several weeks. I had many ideas I wanted overwhelmed1to get down on paper. I had the time but I couldn’t seem to get myself motivated to start. There were other things in my life that needed to get underway as well. It just wasn’t happening. Why was I procrastinating. This was all a puzzle to me. I thought that a procrastination card would help me.

Well I have to tell you when I finished the card I was absolutely shocked at what I had before me. This was not about procrastination at all but about being overwhelmed with all the possibilities. It was about being overwhelmed with all that needed to be done. There it was right in front of me.

This is what my card said to me…

I am the one who is overwhelmed by all there is to do.
I see so many options and opportunities I cannot decide. I
am the one pressured by the clock, by the calendar,
by the feeling that I must do it all,
that I must be superwoman.
I am the one who can’t take the first step.
Instead I fall deeper, deeper.
I am the one who is constantly reminded that
time is passing, flying, slipping away.
Time is money.
The search goes on.
Which direction should I take?
Is there time to stop and smell the roses?
Accept, make a wish list, and enter your destination.
Start moving forward, not back.
Make time work for you.

I am the one who builds on the remnants of the ruined past,
The crumbling stone, the dilapidated safe haven that no longer shelters.
I am the one who climbs over the wall to a new beginning.
I am the one who washes myself clean, ready for what I create.
I take refuge in nature and beauty.
I am the one who realigns the stars.

Although it doesn’t seem like it on this snowy, rainy, sleeting day, Spring will be here soon, at least officially here. The frigid cold of winter has purified the land and my soul. Now it is time to plan for the future, take steps to realign the stars and create that which I desire.

The crumbling stones of the past create a new foundation. I do not discard the past but rather use its materials to create. By their destruction they make available new patterns and new opportunities to rebuild something better and brighter. Something that is more useful to me now.

I’ve just returned from an international tour of a play I have been associated with for several years. Based in fact, this amazing one man play is about the development of a musician from apprentice conductor to a master music director. The teacher or Sorcerer as he is know in the play enables the student/Apprentice to dig deep inside himself, to come out of the comfort box. In doing so the Apprentice exposes his emotions conveying them through the magic of performance into a transformational experience for conductor, musicians and audience. As an artist you must stand emotionally naked before the music, you must become the music. You must leave your comfort box.

Although I have stage managed many performances of this play, Muse of Fire, the venues have allowed me to be self sufficient. This tour with a different city, different venue, different sound and lighting technicians, different technical options every night took me out of my comfort box. I was very nervous about making the necessary instant connections with my colleagues that would create the perfect situation for a successful performance. This was definately out of my comfort box. I am happy to report I successfully stepped out of the box and we had a fantastic tour.

My SoulCollage card The Shy One seems appropriate to this experience. This is what I wrote about her.

I am the shy one, the wall flower happy to stay in the background. I am the one who is second in command but never stands in the spotlight. I am the one who picks up the pieces of other people’s mistakes but doesn’t take credit. I am the one who hides her light afraid that someone may recognize her. I am the one who fears rejection. I am the one who blooms in silence.

The InnocentThis day is different, An inauguration is always a time of heightened emotion but today is special in so many ways. Throughout the day I find myself bursting into tears. The recent storm that, from my vantage point, seemed to cover the whole world in a blanket of deep, deep, white snow created a clean slate. It has the purity of a crisp new sheet of paper waiting to be written upon. This year’s celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has a different luster. All is rising up to meet this day.

As I listen to the voices of young people singing on the steps of the capitol I am overcome. Their faces, bright and smiling, reflect the faces in the crowd there to listen and celebrate. There are tears too. Tears of joy that encompass the struggles of what brought us here to this place and time. A man as well educated, traveled and experienced as Barack Obama could not be called innocent. But he holds the innocence of opportunity-of knowing that in the unknown, new and better ways are possible. I felt that this card from my SoulCollage deck-The Innocent-held special significance today. I am happy to share it with you.

It is a bright, bright, sun-shiny day.

I am the innocent one, starting on a new journey.

I cannot see what lies ahead as the road curves beyond my view.

I am the happy child.

I am happy to explore, see, feel, touch, smell and experience all new things and to see old things in new ways.

The road ahead has no signs. I am free to go as I want.

I am the one who allows the world to bloom before me.

I hold it in my hand.

Inner Balance

balanceHappy New Year to everyone.

As a Feng Shui consultant I deal with  balance in our home and work place. It is about the relationship between buildings and people. But we must create balance in our lives as well. We all need to understand ourselves better, to improve our outlook on life and to forgive ourselves and others for wrongs done, real or imagined. We need to explore those parts of ourselves that keep us from achieving our goals. And we need to celebrate those parts of us that assist us in our life’s purpose. This too is part of good Feng Shui.

In the past year and a half I have been involved in a process called SoulCollage® What in the world is that you might ask? SoulCollage® was developed by Seena Frost in the 1980’s as a tool to use with clients in her therapy practice. It is a creative, fun, social as well as an introspective combination of art and your own process of self exploration. You do not have to be an artist to practice SoulCollage®. Just find some magazines, old books, sketches and doodles, gather scissors, glue and backing material. Then start to cut and paste.

In Feng Shui we use and manipulate unseen energies to create balance and harmony. In the collage process you can use your own inner energies to create a piece intuitively. By that I mean that you do not set out to make a card about a specific issue, person or idea. You simply gather images and start putting them together. When you are finished you may not know why you chose those images. But trust me. Put your new card away for a few days and then look at it again. I can guarantee that you will find amazing messages for your soul hiding in there. Another way to create a collage card it to do it purposefully. Perhaps you want to honor an important person in your life. Or maybe you are working through and issue and you want to get it out. You can do it this way too. When you are done making a card you might want to interview it. Ask the following questions-Who am I, What do you have to give to me, What do you want from me?

Over a period of time you will end up with your own personal deck of cards on different subjects. You can consult your deck daily or when ever you have a question about your life. There are generally 4 suits in your deck, each one serving a different outlook. Companion, Council, Companion and Community are the four standard suits. You are free to add additional categories as it suits your personal exploration.

Part of the fun of this process is that you can gather with friends to make cards, talk about them and interpret them. It becomes a time of joyous reflection. SoulCollage® cards are made from original purchased art (e.g., art published in magazines, calendars, books, cards, etc.) and personal materials (e.g., photos). SoulCollage cards are not to be sold, traded, or bartered and are to be reproduced only for the personal use of the maker of the card. SoulCollage cards may be used as examples to illustrate the SoulCollage® process, but it is a principle of SoulCollage that SoulCollage® cards are not for sale, trade,or barter.

abundance-of-the-universe3Today we had the first real snow of the season. I decided to give myself a bonus day and stay home from work. It had promised to be a big storm but in the end was just moderate. The snow put me in the mood to finish my Christmas cards, since they usually don’t get done til after the new year, this was something big for me. Sometimes they don’t get done at all.

It had been quite a while since last contact with family so I decided to do the dreaded Christmas letter.  At first I thought there was little to report, I spend too much time working and too little time playing. But as I wrote I found my life had been more interesting than thought. Soul Collage has been a very important bright spot to me this year. There is not a lot of time to devote to cutting and pasting but each moment has been precious.

This card is called Abundance of the Universe and it tells me…

I am the one who holds the abundance of the universe in her hands.I am the one who creates from the stuff of stars.I am the one who knows the universe will manifest my desires, be they negative or positive. It is easy. What I dream of can be mine. Be careful what you wish for.

In these difficult economic times it is important to remember that the Universe is indeed abundant. When we concentrate on worrying about what we don’t have, or might  not have in the future we are denying the gifts that are offered to us from The Infinite.

suspendedWelcome to Suspended Soul. This is my first blog and my first post. As I sit here typing, I am watching  “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.  This is my favorite season of the year and one of my favorite Christmas programs. It reminds everyone to think of the important things in life.

Creating a balance in daily living is my goal. Suspended is another way to say balanced. The picture you see here is one of my Soul Collage cards. It says to me that I am the one balanced between heaven and earth. I am balanced between night and day. I am the one who dances on the edge of infinity.

Suspended Soul is a collection of thoughts on many subjects including Feng Shui, Soul Collage, real estate, music and whatever strikes my fancy. I hope you enjoy visiting.
